THE FARM LABOUR PROBLEM

The fact that only nineteen replies were received by the local Primary Production Committee,, in its effort to discover the number of farmers who were short of labour, seems to give the lie direct to the assertion that there is a problem to be solved and met in this connection. Were it not that we know the facts only too well we would on the face of it be entitled to assume that the demand for farm labour was almost non-existent. Knowing this to the contrary however, we are therefore compelled to arrive at the conclusion that the hundreds of farmers who received the circulars were either too pre-occupied to read and digest them, failed to grasp the idea that it was a co-operative scheme designed to help production, or else did not want to be bothered. The council, recognising these factors intends making a further circulation in the near future which will include all farmers on the Rangitaiki Plains and adjacent districts. On receipt of these, farmers are asked to make a point of filling them in in aacordance with their requirements, as they represent a definite attempt to catalogue the requirements of this district, and details will be forwarded to the P.W.D. in an attempt to meet the demand.
