EVENING ON THE RANGITAIKI

Silent and grand the willow trees Sway before the evening breeze, Blowing gently o'er the wastes of sand That fringe the shore to either hand, Hard by the foaming seas. The lofty bush clad mountains lie Silhouetted against the sky Which the sunset colours with purple and red The changing hues expand, and spread Against the masses of sombre cloud, That loom in the west as a gloomy shroud. Now all the plain is wrapt in gloom And the only sound is the thundering boom Of the sea on the surf-bound shore. A. J. Sheat.
