NEW SUBSIDY" SCHEME

SIX MONTHS TRIAL

The following new scheme for the subsidising of farm labour has been received by the Whakatane District Primary Production Council . "The Department of Labour has a scheme whereby farmers may employ inexperienced single men as farm labourers and receive a subsidy of £1 per week for a period of six months. The scheme applies to single men, registered and eligible unemployed, 20-25 years of age inclusive, though where suitable workers of this age are not available, older workers may be ed. The placement of a worker is conditional to a farmer agreeing to;: (a) Pay a weekly wage at a rate not less than the rates as set out in the Agricultural Workers' Act, 1936 and Agricultural Workers' Fixation Orders 1937 and 1938, and observe generally the other conditions of that Act; (b) Accept and insure against statutory liability for accident; (c) Provide free board and lodging, or an allowance in lieu thereof—£l per week in the case of a worker on a dairy farm, and 17/6 d per week in respect of a worker on a sheep farm. (d) Train the worker solely in farm work upon the farmer's own property. (e) Furnish a certificate of service at termination of the worker's engagement (being not less than six months) Where it is established that after six months' employment the worker, through inexperience, is still incapable of earning the full award wages, .consideration will be given to the extension of the subsidy for a further period of up to three mon ths, at 10/- a week. Requests for such extensions are made in writing, and must be accompanied by a recommendation from the local branch of the Farmers' Union."
