OBITUARY
MR H. W. VERCOE The death lias occurred at Ruatolu of Mr Henry Walter Yercoe, aged.B3 years. Deceased who was well known throughout the Bay of Plenty by the older residents, was the first settler in the Pongakawa and Kaikopukopu districts, and over CO 3 r ears ago was associated with the late Mr Seccombe in farming on the Te Matai. This was the time when the Maoris gave considerable trouble, and wiiite settlers had to be very cautious in dealing with them. Mr Vercoe was responsible for the survey of a large amount of land round Te Puke and, with the late Captain Simpson, surveyed the goldmines situated in the Otawa Valley. Captain Ray Vercoe, of Rotorua, who served with distinction in the Great War is the eldest son, and with three of hi A sons, has again volunteered for service. Messrs Innes Vercoe (Paengaroa) and George Vercoe (Hamilton) are brothers of deceased. Two other brothers, Frank and Gladwyn, predeceased him.
