Medical Examination of Recruits. Medical inspection of recruits for the second eciieion of the Special Force will commence in the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty districts on December 24, and continue until January 4. Recruits are asked to note the dates as some of them may be contemplating going away for holidays during the period. Advice of the dates of attendance will be issued shortly. Witnesses' Expenses. A new scale of expenses for witnesses in Court cases came into operation this week, according to a notice in the Ga/.ette. The maximum amount payable under the new schedule will be 13s 4d a day, compared with 8s a day previously. The rate for a half day's attendance will be 6s Bd, against the old payment of 4s. In future, witnesses for the Crown desiring to be paid expenses for attendance must produce a certificate from their employer stating that they have lost wages, as well as the amoourit of siicli loss. :
Mayor "Not Known' "Not known in Masterton" was stamped on the envelope of a letter addressed to Mr T. T. Jordan, Masterton. The letter was returned to the Auckland sender, marked, "Insufficiently addressed." It has sincc been returned to the person for whom it was intended, who is no other than the Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan. The legend, "Not Known in Masterton" makes the envelope one ot ]\lr Jordan s treasured possessions.
Bridge Construction. Steady progress is being made with the reconstruction of Reid's Drain Bridge, McLean's Road. Pil«driving has been completed and tlur placing of caps and headstocks is in hand. Repairs to decking have been carried out on two bridges in Langenberger's Road, and one bridge in Titoki Avenue. Two bridges in MeCutchan's Road required urgent attention. One was replaced by 36in diameter pipes. In the other, the stringers and decking were renewed, second-hand material being utilised. Repairs to sheathing were effected to a bridge on Road, stated the County Engineer, Mr C. H. Breb ner, in his report to the council on Tuesday. Enemy Traders. Seven pages of (he latest Gazette arc occupied with the names and addresses of upward of 400 persons, firms and companies which have been declared enemy traders for the purposes of the Enemy Trading Emergency Regulations, 1939. The Minister of Industries and Commerce is satisfied that they are carrying on business to a substantial extent for the benefit of alien enemies resident out of New Zealand. Some of the names mentioned arc very well known, and addresses given show that the businesses affected are situated in every part of the world. Large numbers arc from different parts of South America, and many others from such countries as Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Iran, Mexico, Cuba, Yugoslavia and Japan.
