MAKETU MEMORIAL
AMENDED DESIGN " ■ fc-. UNVEILING IN JANUARY , 5 . < An amended design for the centennial memorial at Maketu was sub mitted to and approved by the committee at Its last meeting. The alterations, for which .plans were drawn up by the original designer, Mr H. Chappie, Supervisor of Parks, for the Rotorua Borough Council, were suggested by the Auckland Provincial Executive. The inscription for the memorial was also discussed. Instead of a stone arched shelter by a light, the approved plans an obelisk some 20 feet in height. Flanked on the seaward side by a figure of Tamatekapua, navigator of stone from the Maketu estuary J. named after the high priest of the jpj canoe, Ngatoroirangi, the memorial will preserve the memory of the great Arawa leaders. The obelisk will taper from a square base to _ a light at the summit which will the entrance to the Maketu estuary and the Kaituna River at night. It will be set 011 an octagonal base v. made from the same local stone, this base being approached from a c cular step. It is intended to make j|| provision for a drinking fountain J on one side of the cjieli.sk. As for- 'vs merly planned, the memorial will be surrounded by lawns and a ed retaining wall bjr the beach. . The casting of the figure of Tama-*|S tekapua will bn taken from the ceil-tury-old carving in the meetinghouse of that name at Ohinemutu. The completed centeniiali ial, whicli includes the centennial parade from the settlement to landing place, will be unveiled J the Hon. P. C. Webb on January 2; /Jf it will be dedicated by the Rt. Rev. 'lj| F. A. Bennett, Bishop ,of Aotcaroa.
