VISITORS TO OHOPE
Sir,—From the tone adopted by several of your correspondents it would seem that they have runaway with the mistaken idea that the Ohope Beach was created for them alone, merely because, as I suppose they happen to be the fortunate residents there. The references to the visitors, itinerants, etc., are disparag ing to sajr the least, and one would suppose that they were little more than a mob of irresponsibles whose only object was to light fires in unprotected areas and contaminate the reserves. Let me tell "Fire and Disease" that if it were not for the visitors during the holidays, and who incidentally happen to like the seaside just as much as he or she, the beach would not have assumed the prosperous aspect it has to-day, nor would the bloated prices for sections be possible. While I agree that visitors should use every endeavour to preserve the beauty of the native bush scenery, I consider that the residents of Ohope should be more tolerant towards those whose only chance of a change at the seaside occurs at the height of the holiday season. I think it most selfish for your correspondent to smugly accusc
us of all the damage and trotible at the beach and would suggest that a ,i little more understanding on his ; part would result in less * ■ towards those who are only able to make an annua] pilgrimage. Yours etc,, ONE OF THE VISITORS
