MAORI ENLISTMENTS
SEVEN FROM ONE FAMILY
BAY OF PLENTY RECORD
Bay of Plenty may be proud of the fact that the record for enlistments in the Maori Battalion is held by a family at Capo Runaway, named Waenga. In this family Avho aire known to a number of Whakatane residents, there have been no less than nine recruits. Their names are Kirikiri, Henare, Tawhai, Repi, Moutara and Tio. The seven th is a cousin named Waenga Waenga. All the men concerned Ave re first class soldiers and passed the physical test Avith ease. Whakatane, has tAVO families Avho have also set a fine standard in response to the Empire's call. Botli the Riini and the Bluett families of Paroa, ha\ r e supplied three sons Avho have volunteered for service. Their action is a fine example to Maoils and Pakehas alike.
Two more selections have been made from local Maori recruits who have been chosen for training as non-commissioned officers and will go into camp shortly. They are Messrs Thaia Riini, and Sam Bluett.
An officer from headquarters at Paeroa visited the district last Wednesday and after tentative enquiries accepted both men declaring them to be the type of which the battalion was in need.
