THREE DAY'S BLOW

WHAKATANE HOLDS ITS HAT ON CALM AFTER THE STORM The strong easterly gale which drove up on Sunday afternoon and continued without abatement till yes tcrday evening was responsible for some of the heaviest seas seen on the coast this year. The bar which at one period was unworkable calmed down considerably as the wind dropped, but the two launches at Whale Island are still unable to return. At its height the gale, blowing from an unusual quarter an hipped up a driving surl at the Heads and during Monday and Tuesday there were many sightseers to the spot, the great curling breakers and the flying foam combining to make a scene which was both inspiring and spectacular. Reports from Matata indicate that mountainous seas beat the whole of the coastline, flinging the spume high over the narrow sandbank which separates sea from the lagoon sanctuary. There are no reports of serious damage, though many people suffered minor inconvenience, and gardens throughout the Bay of Plenty have been well combed. This morning, though the wind has abated to some extent,, the seas are still high, making the bar precarious for craft to cross, Dark clouds threatening from the south, bear a promise of more unsettled weather though from the north and nor-east conditions are more promis ing.
