YOUTH LABOUR
SCHEME FOR EMPLOYMENT
ON FARMS
The following suggestions of a special committee regarding the lahour of youths and girls from secondary and primary schools during the term holidays were adopted by the Waikato District Council of Primary Production at its last meeting:— That the rate of pay for the weeding of crops should be at per chain row: the rate to be agreed upon to be bj r mutual agreement but not less than the rate per chain defined in the award relating to market growers, etc., i.e., a per chain: it would be expected that the children employed would arrange for their own lunches; where necessary transport would be arranged by the farmers; and where children supplied hoes they would receive an extra 3d a day.
The recommendations of the committee will be referred to the Industrial Division of the Department of
Labour
If the Industrial Division of the Labour Department approve the suggestions made, members of the district council will be deputed to visit the schools arranging for talks to the masters and children on the subject, stressing particularly that if the children would assist in the manner suggested thev would be doing their upart in helping to increase production.
