PATRIOTIC APPEAL

SPLENDID RESPONSE

GREAT EFFORT BY LADIES

The ladies of the Whakatane Red Cross Society were responsible for a wonderful ell'orl on Friday when they collected the sum of £(>0 l(ss 2d for patriotic purposes. With stall, competitions, a house-to-house canvass, and the street collection, the ladies put their hearts into the work and the whole effort is laudable.

The ladies answered an extremely short notice of appeal for their services but with a willingness unmatched in any other activity, they responded with their magnificent contribution towards a great cause.

It was unfortunate that the day chosen for the appeal should have been so hot because this was a handicap to those on the street collecting and the house-to-house canvassing. On the other hand success would not have attended the effort had the day been wet. The stall and competitions drew the sum of £15 18s 5d Avhile the street collection raised the total of £19 Ss. The canvass of the houses in the borough resulted in the sum of £25 9s 9d being collected.

The competitions attracted interest, liberal support being accorded them. The results of these competitions are as under ; Mystery Parcel: Mrs G. Booth. Cosmetic Set: Mr W. Roberts. Dinner: Mrs F. J. Appleby. Doll and Cot: Miss Mildred Q'Brien The public contributed generously when an appeal was addressed to them, and the majority of the people seen in the Strand on Friday afternoon and in the evening were wearing the red cross. No matter how much the public were prepared to, and did, contribute, the amount rais ed would not have been so great had not that willing band of workers, who comprise the Red Cross Society, spent long hours in collecting.
