POLICE OFFICER'S RETIREMENT
The forthcoming retirement of Constable T. J. Cummings, after twenty-nine years continuous service 'in this district, recalls for many residents scenes of the colourful past, when Whakatane, a much smaller, though just as vigourous town as now, went through its growing pains and developed into the important trading centre as we know it today Constable Cummings has figured rin the boisterous pre-war period when it was necessary to treat offenders against the law in unorthodox and summary methods. He has for many years been associated with the life of the town and district, earning the regard and respect of all who live in the wide and populous district which came under his jurisdiction. It will be hard to disassociate him with Whakatane during his retirement, but citizens without exception will join in wishing him good health and many , long years of relaxation, following a particularly full and arduous life.
