THE HOUSING PROBLEM
In spite of the fact that Whakatane has over forty Government houses now erected and occupied, it is announced by the Department that there are no less than sixty applicants for the four new units which are being* allocated at the end of the present month. This furnishes an indication of the acute housing* shortage, which instead of diminishing* with the increasing* number of houses going up, is apparantly becoming* worse. The number of privately built houses in the Borough is also considerable, but in spite of this we have been reliably informed that the State Advances Department intends increasing the government housing units till there are no less than one hundred in the Borough. The next census should reveal some interesting figures for Whakatane and district.
