The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 22nd, 1939. TRIBUTE TO VISIONARIES
"I want to pay a tribute to those men who were first to visualise the value of planting pinus insignus in the wastelands of the Dominion; those who first realised the great potentialities of the woodpulp industry in New Zealand. It is said of he who plants a tree that he is rendering a service to his fellowmen. Of those who first realised the value of planting the pine forests to feed this mill, which stands for such a vast commercial enterprise, the same may be truly said. They are the: men who in spite of the discouragement and the obstacles, went steadily on till they had created a woodpulp plant which today is one of the finest in the world. We may yet live to see the day when the returns from the man-made forests of this country will exceed those of the dasiry industry. Today we are on the verge of these things. We cannot see the forests for the trees. We fail to see the completed plan. But this we do know that we have in this country a climate and a soil condition which for the production of pulp-woods is second to no other (in the world. It is with these thoughts in mind that I would like to pay a tribute to the poineers of this great and new industry; to the men who dreamed a. dream and had the hardihood and the courage to make that dream come true." Mr,; J. E. Wild, at Wednesday's meeting of shareholders of the Whakatane Paper Milis.
