SOME DISCUSSION METERS FOR LOCAL TAXIS The Mayor reported at the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening that he had granted per mission to the Red Cross Society to use the Borough Chambers free of charge for their evening instruction classes. He commented that the num ber attending these classes, 25 to 30. Avas very good. The Council approved the Mayor's action. Centennial Park. A form of lease, prepared for the Borough's seal, Avas receiA r ed from the Whakatane Harbour Board. The Mayor stated *that he had been through the leases and they Avere in order. He had requested the Harbour Board to delete one clause referring to the responsibilit.v for damage done to the reclamation and this request had been granted.
The terms of the leases were on the usual lines, a 21 year term and a nominal rental. The documents were approved. Employees in Forces. Advice was received from the Muni cipal Association with reference to Local Body employees serving in the military, naval and air forces, The Association forwarded the Occupational Re-establishment Emergency Regulations which state that any employee of a local body has the right to claim the position he occupied prior to his enlistment, within one month of the termination of his services in the forces in New Zealand, or within six months if he is discharged from the forces overseas, "In effect," said the Mayor, "he must get his job back."
Cr Sullivan: Providing there is room for him. What if we 1 have engaged another man in the meanwhile?
The Mayor: The mere fact that you take another man on is no excuse . The letter was received with no further discussion. Meters for Taxis. A communication from the Commissioner of Transport was tabled and this requested information on the number of taxis operating in the Borough, that were not fitted with meters.
His Worship the Mayor pointed out that the taxis would now have to have meters fitted and the fact that the taxis would henceforth be under the control of the Commissioner of Transport, would mean a loss of approximately £20 in revenue to the Borough.
"It looks as though it's going to cost the taxi-owners £60 each for a meter," said the Mayor. "They ed for it and they're getting it."
