FINE PERCENTAGE
MEDICAL EXAMINATION PASSES I
~ MAORI RECRUITS On Saturday and Sunday last 54 recruits for the jVlaori Battalion were examined by the Medical Board, comprising Drs Ap- * pleby, Fletcher Cole, and Dawson, and Mr S. H. Tippett, dentist member.
The Medical Board found that the physical standard of the recruits was very high, only three being re- >
jected as permanently unfit. Thirtyfour were passed as fit and were attested for service, while seventeen were stood down as temporarily unfit for minor causes. It is expected that the latter will- be fit in time to enter camp with their mates who will be called up about the midcNe of January. Further Examination. A further sitting of the Board will be held on Saturday n when all Maori recruits who have not yet been medically examined, are requested to attend. High Percentage Pass. Thirty-four total passes out fifty-four examined, is a percentage the Maoris can be proud of, and only three complete rejections is a fact, that the Maori race can boast of f.or generations to come. If the seventeen temporarily stood down owing to minor causes, are passed fit at the next sitting of the Board, the pejj; centage of passes should constitute a record, and it is pleasing to note that this will stand to the credit of Whakatane.
