WINTER SHOW ASSOCIATION

PRESIDENT REVIEWS

ACTIVITIES

STRONGER MEMBERSHIP URGED

In liis report to the ltftli annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Winter 'Show Association, held on Thursday evening, the retiring president, Mr W. Sullivan, said:—-

It is again my pleasant duty to present to you the annual report of the Bay of Plenty Winter Show Association. As Avill be seen from the balance sheet we have once again experienced a successful annual fixture, the credit profit from the Show for the year 1938-39 being £205. On the year's working our position is not as good as Ave Avould like, the nett surplus over the year's operations being £8 7s Id. This reduced annual surplus is accounted for by the fact that hall rentals haA*e not reached the previous year's revenue figures, the maintenance charges haA'e been slightly higher and that full provision has been made for depreciation on the Avholc of the association's assets.

HoAveA'er it is worth while noting that the position of the association is gathering strength year by year and during the last A r ear's operations your committee ha\*c been able to clear off the bank liability, which iioav places our debenture holders in the position of having n first charge OAcr the assets of the association, and after deducting our credit balance from the debenture liability, the nett total indebtedness of the association at date is only £787 against full asset values as shoAA'n on the balance sheet of £1820. We must therefore regard the posi-

tion as very satisfactory, as our shoAV is run as an amenity to the public and not Avith a vieAA' to making large profits.

Entries and Patronage,

The entries and patronage offered the ShoAV in the year closed is regarded as A'cry satisfactory, and sections of the Show calling for special mention are the poultry shoAV Avhich ; again, by a body of enthusiastic workers, staged an exhibit Avhicli brought special praise from the judge, Mr Nixon, to the effect that the poultry exhibits Avould compare favourably Avith similar exhibits at

anA r other shov.

The motor exhibit Avas AA'el 1 up to standard and given better staging facilities this section could and Avould give us a better exhibit. The home-cookery, needleAvork and school displays Avere very creditable and in these sections our success is Avholljr due to that body of enthusiastic Avorkers avlio applied themselves to this job in a Avay that Ave are alt grateful for, and I am sure sets an example to us all.

Appreciation of Services

Again let me place on record our appreciation of that large body of ladies who gave us their whole-hearted support in the tea and luncheon rooms, sweet stall, etc. Without this help we would find our show costs considerably greater. Planning Foi Next Year. In all shows as in most things we look forward to the future and it is our job to plan for the 1940 Show on the knowledge of our past experience. Any suggestions that can be made at this meeting will be noted and if after consideration prove worthy will be given effect to.

One feature that could be developed with good results appears to be the introduction of root crop courts exhibits to be staged and conducted by the Young Farmers' Club. Courts could be staged by the Waimann. Taneatua and Rangitaiki districts. This was in a small degree tried out last show and given further encouragement a good display in the Root Crop Section could be staged.

Question of Amalgamation.

in reference to the question of amalgamation willi the Agricultural and Pastoral Association raised at our last annual meeting your executive and committee gave this question very full consideration bringing forward a proposal that in principal met with the full approval of the joint committee of the tAvo Associations, and after full discussion it has been decided to hold the matter in abe3 r ance meanwhile, the present time of emergency not being considered opportune to put the proposal into effect.

The financing of the amalgamation proposal was to be done by debenture issue, but in view of the pre-

Continued at foot of next column)

sent state'of'emergency it is not advisable to proceed. We will, therefore, in the immediate future be conducting our shows separately as in the past. This will no doubt allow both organisations the opportunity of further consolidating which in the end will make complete amalgamation more easily effected.

Campaign for Members,

I desire once again to place on re-

cord .your executive's appreciation of the patronage afforded tlie show, also our greatest Lhanks to that large body of workers who came forward to assist in our yearly exhibit.

In conclusion it will not be out of place to mention that the year 1940 may be a more difficult year for the successful conduct of the show, and in this regard we should set to work early to l'orm our programme, marshall our efforts and particularly make a drive for greatly increased

membership

Personal Thanks

I wisli to express my personal thanks to the executive, the public and the secretary for the splendid work achieved in the past.
