CO-OPERATION?
THE RUSH TO ASSISTANCE
SPECTATORS ENJOY FIRE
One of the most, remarkable features, if it may be described as such, of yesterday's fire at Ohope, was the manner in which a large number of young men, at least thirty or forty chose the role of spectators, rather than giving active assistance to the small band of hard pressed fire fighters on the hillside. Certainly the spectacle was something out of the ordinary, and therefore worth staring at, hands in pockets, and superior air of languid importance but did it ever occur to these complacent individuals, masquerading as men that when a fire threatens homes the call for assistance is to everyone, not merely a few. If this selfish attitude of complete apathy to anotliers discomforture runs as deep as yestersample would indicate then it is a poor outlook for us as a people.
