ATHENIA CONTROVERSY
BRITISH STATEMENT TO U.S.A.
GERMAN ALLEGATIONS REFUTED
In order to counteract all the Nazi propaganda a\ul campaign of lies with regard to the sinking of the Athenia in the early days of the war the British Government has made a complete statement to the United States, to the effect that the Athenia carried 110 bullion or bond se-
curities, no guns or munitions ot any description. That it was not sunk by a British mine, submarine or destroyer, but by an enemy submarine. Further that the ship was not armed,, nor was it intended to use her as a sea raider. And lastly that the chief officer has sworn that he never at any time discussed with Mr Anderson, the American journalist, the possible conversion of the steamer as a raider.
The above disposes of all the allegations as fantastic.
