BAY ATHLETES

AN INTER-CLUB COMPETITION

SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE

A meeting of the Lay of Plenty Amateur Athletic Clubs was held in the Whakatane Borough Chambers on Thursday, October 12 when re pre" sentatives from Tauranga, Te Puke and Whakatane were present. Mr L. Ormond Avas elected chairman.

[ Mr W. J. Sommers (Tauranga) the convenor of the meeting, said that it ,>vas called to foster in-ter-club competition, not forgetting the juveniles, and to build up the weaker clubs in the Bay. He Avas strongly supported by Mr BroAvnlee (Te Puke).

It was decided that each club should contribute towards a banner (colour, maroon with gold fringe lettering) for inter-club competition in the Bay.

It was decided to hold the first meeting in Whakatane, the date to be selected by the Whakatane club. This has since been fixed for Saturday, December 16.

In the event of neither Opotiki or Ngongotaha clubs coming in for com petition, it Avas decided to contest the banner on the grounds of the three clubs represented this season.

It was unanimously agreed that this inter-club competition would not only create greater club competition but also greater public support. The visitors were later entertained by the local club to supper. GETTING TRACK READY WORK ON THE DOMAIN Much work in the direction of topdressing and levelling has been done by working bees on the Whakatane Athletic Club's track on the Domain, and the surface is in good order. Further work will* be done by a working bee on. Labour Day and this should complete the necessary preparations for the season, which opens with a meeting on November Ist. The membership in this, the second year of the club's existence, is satisfactory, and a pleasing feature is that the new members include several ladies and cyclists. These sections were iather weak last year.
