WELCOME RAIN The welcome rain of the past few days has given a fillip to pasture growth and .10 to dairy production. Crops and vegetables have benefited considerably, and so have flowers in the gardens. The rain has also* meant great activity on the snail and slug Jront, and the llickcr of torches in many gardens after dark show that persistent raids, are being repulsed with heavy enemy casualties. COURT SITS There will be a court sitting in Whakatane to-day, but though there is a good deal of work to be done not much can be brought forward as no magistrate will be on the bench. Thus ? only cases that justices can deal with will be heard. This position arises from the continued illness 01 the magistarte,. Mr E. L. and the fact that Mr J, H. Luxford, S.M., avlio conducted the court last month, is unavailable. BLASTING STUMPS A request from Mr V. Timbs that the council should assist him by blast ing gum tree stumps on his Stewart Street property was considered by the Whakatane Borough Council at Monday's meeting after the subject had been introduced by Cr .F.
