SILTING OF HARBOUR REFUTED
The stout denial by the Chairman of the Harbour Board in the face of allegations to the contrary, that the Whakatane harbour runs the risk of shallowing at its mouth in the event of any further reclamation of its mudflats, makes pleasant reading, and we can now rest assured that the bogey which at one stage bade fair to upset the course of the main highway through the town has been at last effectually blown out. It is noted that the board members generally supported the chairman in' his contention but at the same time one and all were prepared to bide by the opinion of a competent engineer. It was proved by the discussion however that the harbour is not shallower, and that ships of progressively greater draught are entering the bar as time goes on. In any case the fate of the main highway is probably seriously effected by the war, and though the town has not forgotten, it is more than probable the common belief that the project will be treated to the inevitable shelving.
