INSTITUTES GATHER
EASTERN FEDERATION MEETING BUSY AFTERNOON AT WAIOTAHI The bii-annual council meeting of the Easter Bay ofi Plenty Federation of Women's Institutes was held at Waiotahi on October 5th j when Mrs Wool(kId presided over a large gathering of members and delegates from Edgeeumbe, Galatea, Manawahe, Matata, Opotiki, Otara, Tan eatua, Te Kaha, Waimana-Nuluihou Waiotahi, Whakatane and Woodlands Institutes. The meeting opened with the singing of the "0:1 c to followed by the "Greed.'' The voluntary organisers, Mrs H. Withy and Mrs V. Wilson presented their reports of their activities for the past six months. One new institute has been formed at Galatea. WAR WORK. The president in, her speech stressed the need for institutes to pull together more than ever during the present crisis and asked them to cooperate in the various good works in their own districts, not forgetting to carry on with their own institute life. One suggestion to institutes was that they keep in, touch with: their own local boys who had ed up," sending them comforts etc., especially those ones who perhaps had no relatives in. the district from which they had enlisted. mal celebration at laneatua nas nau to be abandoned, Mr,s Wool field suggested that each institute member plant a special tree, as a mark of . the centennial during 1940. The competitors in the recent drama festivals at Whale at ane and Opotiki Ave re congratulated. The institutes which presented the Avinning play at each festival (Whakataius and Opotiki) will each hold the trophy for six months. It Avas decided that the usual potato competition, held for federation funds, be held on an "average weight for institute member" basis, as being more fair, cA'ery member ofl the institute to be counted. The potatoes are to be dug any time before the April council meeting, AA T hen the Potato Shield will be presented to ! the Avinning institute. The half yearly reports of the various institutes showed much progress | and mostly increased membership. REMITS, The folloAving remits Avere carried: 1 1. That in future tea arrangements at drama festiA'als etc be lc£t in the hands of the groups concerned. 2. That members be encouraged -i rfarrlenins circles especially
to form gardening circles for the growing of as these are so nccessary for the promotion of good health. 3. That when school children are alighting Irom buses all traffic be made to stop. 4. That the institutes in this federation appeal to members to abide by the rules, urged by the Government, re hoarding of foodstsuffs other commodities. During the social half hour songs were sweetly sung by Mrs Burke and Mrs Davies, A keenly contested debate ''That town life is preferable to country life" was presented by Waio tahi and Otara Institutes. Mrs Jerram( Avho kindly acted as judge, gave the decision in favour of the negative side (Otara) by 38 points to 3-1. The competition results were:— 1. Institute Banner: Otara 1. 2.
