TANGI AT TOROA
PROMINENT MAORI PASSES
LARGE TRIBAL GATHERING
The funeral and tangi, of the late Mrs Rose Mason (Rutina)' at Toroa meetinghouse, last Wednesday, drew a large number of local Maoris, together with representatives from Ta.it ranga ? and Te Teko to the local marae. The usual rites were carried out in the presence of" 250' people > and following the interment, the tangi' took place in the newly erected" liall.
Maori hospitality was extended to several pakeha visitors who attended, and who evinced interest" in thf? caolang arrangements, which' were carried out in the traditional hangis or native ovens, The complete absence of any formality- soon put the> visitors at their ease and tliey came away with a very enhanced opinion of the kindliness and attention of their Maori hosts.
