NOTES AND COMMENTS
GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS Beaulivre. generally known as the 2900 guineas thoroughbred has been left at Avondale, in charge of H. Eva, and will be Avorked there imtil the Auckland meeting, when he will be a much fancied contestant in the Great Northern Guineas. He won the Avondale Guineas in 1.43, but will have to go faster in his next race to gain the winning honours, BREED WILL TELL In racing circles there is an oldtime saying "Breed will tell" which is otften heard, and Avheu horses register more or less important victories interest is then centred in the breeding lines of the successful candidates. A recent case in, point is that of The Cardinal, who this month accounted for the Avondale Cup in n convincing manner. This Matamata owned chestnut is very stoutly bred being by Night Raid, th« sire of the great Phar Lap and other candidates of real merit from Palestrina (N.Z. Oaks) by her, dam being Judith by Martian Urom the imported mare Hcbran Maid. In respect to breeding lines The Cardinal ranks distinctly high and his future performances may be in keeping with this fact. In any case he promises to be a sale bargain, as he was purchased by Mr J. Corbett, of Matamata, at the Trentham thorough bred sales for the moderate pricc of 160 guineas. AN IMPROVED HACK One of the most improved hacks seen out this season is the Matamata owned. Val Lu, a liTjur year old by King Lu from Valress. At th*-. recent Pakuranga meeting he ran fourth in the Sylvia Park Handicap, and at Avondale he raced prominently in, the Champion Plate. On second day of that meeting he ran Erndale to three-quarters of a length in the President's Handicap of six furlongs. The latter performance was his best to date and he should get on to the winning list before long.
FOR SHORTER RACES It has been decided by the .Tamieson stable that High Caste will not start in the A.J.C. Derby, but will be reserved for short races. So far his forte appears to be sprint racing so it may be as well to keep him clear of long distance efforts until he is a Pour year old.
