WHAKATANE LADIES GATHER The September meeting "of th? Whakatane Women's Institute was held in the Parish Hall on September sth, there being a very good attendance. The business of the meeting proceeded smoothly remits for the B.ir-annual Conference being dealt! with. The president Mrs K. Armstrong moved that in view of the declaration of Avar, all efforts to raise funds for the erection of the Institute Hail jbe suspended. After discussion, this resolution was passed it being decided to leave the money already in hand, in the Building iFund. as at present. Mrs Moran undertook, with several assistants the arrangement of an exhibit to the forthcoming Anglican Flower Show. Members were asked to assist by bringing flowers to the Parish Hall ? on the morning of the show, September 15. A delightful talk on 'the care of pot plants, and ferns was given by Mrs A. Martin; and suggestions were made by Mrs Martin on making the best use of small plots of ground, from the point of view of both decoration and utility. During the serving of afternoon tea, a roll call of gardening difficulties was heard, Mrs Martin and mem hers all making helpful comments in reply. COMPETITIONS. Mrs Mulholland won, the wall competition and Mrs Zinsli the making of a flower buttonhole within a three minute limit. The points for the best flower went to Mrs Wheeler and for the jug of flowers Mrs Moran 1, Mrs Martin 2. It was unanimously decided to send a letter of regret to Mrs L. Sisam, last year's president in connection with her continued indifferent health. During the afternoon the Trading Stall did a brisk trade; and the special effort in the form of an Apron Stall netted the satisfactory sum of nearly £2. Just before the meeting closed Mrs Sutcliffe rose to move a vote of thanks to all who had assisted'at the? ] staging of the recent Drama Festival The meeting closed as it had opened with the singing of the National Anthem.
