SMALL FISHERMAN

THREE YEAR OLD CATCHES BARRACOUTA UNUSUAL VISITOR TO RIVER Buddy Crapp three year old son of Mr Walter Crapp, Whakatane, hooked, the strangest fish caught in, the Whakatane river for many yeais when, some days ago, he caught a barracouta which, on being landed, proved to be 3ft 3in. in length. A line had been set and hooks stripped off. Fresh hooks had been placed on it and the line thrown out again, and the little fellow had been in charge of it for a minute or so when the fish struck violently. Buddy had no thought to letting go, but braced himself against the strong ly pulling fish. He was being pulled to the edge of the concrete wharf when Mr Young, who was fishing nearby, ran up and caught hold of him and helped to land the fish., Barracouta are often caught off the coast, but Buddy's grandfather Mr J, Crapp says that in 47 years in Whakatane he has never heard of one being caught in the river before, and this, is confirmed by other experienced men. Schnapper are occasionally taken at the wharf, but it is an extraordinary thing for a barracouta to come into fresh water.
