Hollis helping to fill up the ranks of the visitors kicked an excellent goal fiom about 10"yards inside half-way. The Te Awamutu team had a big pack of forwards and were well 1 -d bv J. G. Wynyard, All Black who showed his prowess in line out play. Other good forwards were Caldwell and Laury. The backs were not quite so impressive, though Hollis played a good game. Te Awamutu were three men short and Hollis, Francis and J. Whitehead turned out for them.
J. Denham started with plenty of dash for Whakatane, but his weight slowed him up a little toward the end. K. Hollis was useful too. Lysaght took the eye as a five-eighth, and Chambers was a real star both on attack and defence. Playing tor the first time since his injury early in the season Good all got through his work at fullback quite well. Whakatane attacked early and Te Aw 'amutu forced. Denham and K. Hollis followed up hard, and when a Te Awamutu man infringed Chambers goaled. City looked like getting another score when Thompson intercepted at halfway and shot down to the corner swerving round Laskey, but Dalzill got him. Play went down to the other end and Whitehead scored a try which was converted. (5-3). F. Hollis missed a hard penalty by little. Play was now quite inter, esting. Jackson held on a little too long and spoilt a try, and again Den ham was unlucky to knock on when, getting into the open. The visitors rucked strongly on the W T hakatane line, and Laury scored following an opening by Hollis. The kick missed. | (8-3). F. Hollis lined in the corner, and whe n play swung over the field Laskey was not far short of the line. I). Stewart replaced Charman on the wing in the second half. Jackson bolted through but was. recalled for an infringement, and Laury goaled. (11-3). Stewart showed up-when he intercepted and Chambers dummied two men Denham following a kick lo score. Chambers missed (11-6). Te Awamutu were a little lucky when Stewart caught Dalzill by smartly following a kick, but he was unsupported. Then Laury broke away, kicked and followed but ho over ran the ball as he was stooping to score and Goodall cleared. Chambers took Wynyard a moment later when he dived for the line. Play swung to the other end and Chambers crossed after a straight hard run. He missed the hard kick (11-9).
Then Stewart kicked neatly and Lysaght shot in to ground hear the posts. Chambers should have kicked this one (12-11).
Te Awamutu pressed but the defence held and Wilson led the clearing rush. Wynyard and Daniels dribbled across but Chambers beat them again, and a" little later swung play to the other end. Hollis, near halfway had a hard penalty shot, and he put it between the posts (14.12). The rest of the game was fairlv even. Mr B. Norman refereed well.
