GLIDING CLUB
FIRST FLIGHTS SUCCEED i KEEN INTEREST SHOWN So much success has attended the trial flights of the Whakatane-built glider that keen interest has been aroused among men wishing to take on the sport and there seems no doubt that a strong and successful gliding club can be founded. Tbe glider, the work of several men in the last few months, has performed excellently, and last week-end it was in action on the beach at Ohope when a number of flight? were made ? some at the altitude of about 150 1 feet. There are at present eight men, taking an active part, and with the successful flights, many others are likely to join up. The present gliding is of the train ing and the next step will be the construction of a soaring plane, so that extended flights can be made The country around Whakatane 4 should be very suitable as the broken formation provides the necessary up-currents of air which enable these planes to keep aloft for hours at a time.
