WIN AND PLACE The system of betting at the Grand National meeting will be win an,d place, and a big total of investment is confidently expected. GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLES This week's favourite division for the Grand National Steeplechase of three miles and a half are Padishah, Survoy, Slayer and Erination. The first named is now a popular favourite. A BIG DOMINION TOTAL Totalisator investments in the Dominion in the 1939-40 now Just at its close, amounted to the greait total of £8,000,000 a decided increase on the previous year's turnover. It is anticipated that the race will resolve into a truly great battle for supremacy although as a matter of fact it may be no certainty for New Zealand bred horses. RE.COMMISSIONED Birthday, by Limond-Queen March who in the early paflt of his turf j career raced in Australia., and on his return won a race at the Waikaio meeting in November last, and later suffered a partial breakdown has boon re.commissioned at Ellerslie. If he keeps sound he is likely to win races in the season. GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES The result of the Grand National Hutfdles to be decided on the second day of the National meeting, will greatly depend upon the condition in ; which several candidates engaged in both events, emerge from the steeplechase contest. Those whose chances are more popularly fancied are Charade Padishah, King Rey, Survoy and Triavenna. ROUND UP FOR AUSTRALIA At Takanini Round Up is accomplishing very satisfactory work in iview of an Australian trip in tii.c 1 course of which ho is to compete in the Caulfield up and Melbourne Cup. His form in New Zealand latft season was distinctly good and as the Lord Ojiex gelding is very consistent, he should at run very prominently in his engagements on the other side.
