POSITION IN WHAKATANE MAKING ARMY ATTRACTIVE Inquiries have been made concerning the territorial position in Whakatane, which to-day is that Whakatane is expected to supply a company of men, plus some details for headquarters an,d administration, signallers, etc. Te Puke is expected to provide one platoon, Opotiki one platoon and Whakatane two platoons, plus 21 men for transport and special duties. The Whakatane branch of the Territorial Association has decided to take active measures in the encouragement of recruiting, and will in future establish a gvmnasiu|i with suit able gear. Boxing gloves, a wrestling mat and tumbling gear has been ordered, and the bulk of this is expected to arrive to-day. Arrangements are also being made to have gymnasium classes alternat. ing with military training nights. A feature of the campaign is that a number of ladies are extremely interested and are keenly awaiting in. structions along lines that will enable them to take the place of men in tlic event of an emergency arising. The designation of the various mill tary units throughout the Hauraki regimental district are: A Company. Morrinsville, Matamata Te Aroha; B Company, Te Puke, Opotiki, Whakatane; C Paeroa, Hauraki Plains and Waihi; D Company, (which includes a machine gun sec. tion), Rotorua and Thames; Headquarters and Signal Corps, Tauranga; Transport } Rotorua and Whakatane. In connection with territorial mat. | ters locally, a number of ladies have interested themselves in, raising canteen funds, and the association wishes to thank them for their co. operation.
