PROMOTING A QUEEN CARNIVAL
IN pursuance of its declared pol'icy of affording tangiole assistance movement that makes for the progress and betteiment of Whakatane, the BEACON, now takes pleasure in convening a public meeting of all interested in the proposal for better facilities in the Sports Domain. The meeting will take place in the County Council Chambers on Monday evening next JULY 24th at 8 p.m. and will discuss the possibilities of holding a district-wide Queen Carnival, for the purpose of raising a suggested target figure of £800. His Worship the Mayor, Mr. B S Barry, has kindly consented to take the chair and details of an entire campaign will be placed before the meeting and opened for discussion. Steps have been taken since the project was first mentioned in these columns, to contact responsible representatives of the various sports organisations in Whakatane, with the result that there is now a definite, and unanimous movement in strong favour of holding a carnival. It is felt by this method that all groups, however small will be able to participate, in a manner that will bring worthwhile results, and overcome the present piecemeal and disheartening appeals to a disinterested public. By pooling their efforts, the several local sports bodies will have a ready-made and sympathetic field of operation. Few families are not interested in Sport of some description. And if the objective is to cover, and lend encouragement to all types of games that may be played' on the town's recreation area, then the campaign should not lack support. The proposal as it now stands is for a four cornered Carnival, with queens to represent, Town Football, Country Football Cricket and Hockey, and Basketball and Croquet. These divisions are merely tentative, and are open to adjustment, in the event of other sporting bodies desii'ing to combine forces such as the Athletic or Tennis Clubs. The idea at present sprung from a recent conference of interested sportsmen, that a Central Trust should be created for the purpose of handling the the Carnival funds and allocating them at its conclusion to the best advantage of the various interests, by modernising and improving the Sportfe Domain. It is hoped to .make the Domain an athletic field' which will be a pride to the citizens of Whakatane, and an area that will cater for all the sporting requirements of the town for many years to come. The endeavour at the present time is to direct public attention to the forthcoming meeing and to emphasise the urgent need for a carnival campaign which while not being too long, will at the same time result in a fairly substantial sum being raised.
