TOPICS AT COUNCIL MEETING The Whakatane Borough Council held its monthly meeting on, Monday night. Present were the Mr B. S. Bariy, and Councillors G. Otley, W. Sullivan, C .S. Armstrong J. Arres, A. J. Canning, ,F. Prideaux A. Hall and the Town Mr D. V. Saunders. A letter was received from Mr T. Francis agreeing to record some of the early history of Whakatane as he knew it. Mr B. S. Barry said that Mr Saunders had suggested that an effort should be made to have such information recorded, and when Mr Francis had completed his work other old identities might be approached. It was resolved to pay the balance of the fees owing to Mr W. Arthur Gray, the engineer who drew up the sewerage scheme. The Director of Housing Construction advised the purchase of properties in Lovelock Street and Salonika Street. Any re_sealing on state? highways through the borough will be done by the Public Works Dapartment, which will also subsidise the cost of pedestrian crossings on highways, according to two letters from the de. partment. The general manager of the Sydney County Council enclosed a list of mining and engineering firms who migM find a market for the borough's hydro.electric plant. Two letters were received dealing with centennial matters. One from the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council reported on, the national council meeting and stated that the i Whakatane plan for a park at The Heads had been approved, and the j other from the Bay of Plenty committee stated that approval had been held up owing to lack of detail in the plan submitted. The council will have the position clarified. The solicitor to the Municipal As. j sociation gave as his opinion that ! rates were not payable on that portion of the ''Press* buildings occupied by ■•Government Departments.
