SHINGLE CARTAGE DOUBLED EFFECT OF NEW RATE SCHEDULE U W. The Whakatane Borough Council at its meeting on Monday night decided to make a pfotcst regarding the price fixed for the cartage of river bed shingle under the scale issued by the No. 1 Licensing Authority, which comes into effect next Monday, July 17. The matter was raised by Mr V/. S. Henderson, Borough Foreman, who said he had been authorised to expend £125 on the purchase and cartage of shingle for The Heads job. Under the new scale of prices cartage would cost about lis (id a yard instead of os a yard as had been estimated. CARRIERS SATISFIED. Cr W. Sullivan said he thought the carriers were satisfied to do the job for the former prices. There was no reason why a district having such natural facilities should be called on to pay something li'ke double the pre sent charges.
