RAGWORT CAMPAIGN
—o I PLANS FOR COMING SEASON 55 PER CENT SUBSIDY SOUGHT The conditions of the scheme for the control of ragwort in the coming season were discussed by the Whakatane County Council on Tuesday when Mr Cleland, principal inspector, waited on it to. discuss the a_ ■ mount of the required. A circular letter stated that in the event of a county having to undertake a programme of a type -which" would cost something in excess of 45 per ccnt of wages for materials, etc., the onus of submitting the pro. gramme was to rest on the council concerned, and that no greater subsidy would be paid unless authority was given by the Government beforehand. The engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, estimated that £4979 would be expend ed in the coming year, material a_ mounting. to £1739 and k wages to £3240 Cr Cawte asked that something be done in his riding. Labour would be available and a little work could be done every year. Most of ! he native land was under the Ngata scheme and was heavily .stocked w'th sheep. The Government on the Galatea block was the worst offender. After the discussion with Mr Cleland it was deciVd that the council should apply for a subsidy of 55 per cent of wages.
