HIGHWAY MONEY
GRANTS OVER LAST SIX YEARS COST OF PRESENT WORK As an indication of the amount of Government money expended on the reconstruction of roads and bridges within the Wiiakatane County tinder the present programme, Mr A. CHultquist M.P. has forwarded the following statement from the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. R. Scmple: Whakatan.c-Gisborne State Highway (Whakatane-Taneatua) section re-alignment and sealing £10,33G Whakatane.Rotorua State High, way (Awakeri - Whakatane section) realignment .... 5904 Whakatanc-Paeroa State Highway (Whakatane Bridge to Tauranga) reconstruction and sealing - . • • • 4800 Whakatanc-Paeroa State High, way (Otamarakau _ Whakatane) reconstruction and wid ening ' 3700 Matata Bridge £25, 740 The introduction of state highways resulted in the Whakatane County Council being relieved of Its previous proportion of maintenance expenditure uoon over 68 miles of main highway, continues Mr Semple. The estimated average annual saving tiv the council in this rc.spect, is £1700, so that since November 1 1930 when the state highways were declared, the council has saved over £4000. GRANTS FOR SIX YEARS Mr Semnle encloses a return of appropriations and expenditur e in the Whakatane Countv for the years 1933 to 1939. In 1933-34. of free mo"cy, £4042 was appropriated and £2560 expended. As £1 for £1 subsidy £100 was annropriated and £82 expended, making a total of £4142 ap, propriatcd and £2642 expended. In 1934-35 under the heading of free money £9348 was appropriated and £6184. expended. Subsidy money asi £1 for £1 amounted to £1150 appropriated and £150 expended, and as £3 for £1, £450 Avas appropriated and nothing expended, making a total for the year of £10 ( 948 appropriated and £6334 expended. In 1935-36 £31,628 of free moiu-v was appropriated and £8157 expended. Fo" £1 for' £1 subsidy £2770 wn; appropriated and £911 expended, and ar, £3 for £1, £(450 appropriated and £448 expended. The tota' f~r that vear was £31,818 appropriated «*id £9519 expended. The figures for 1936-37 were £43.270 of free money appropriated and £46.690 expended. £1 for P 1 subsidy money amounted to £2920 appropriated and £1879 expended the totals for the year £46,190 appropriated and £48.569 expended. Tn 1937-38 free mnnev amounted to *72,420 and £48 174 w£js expended.
