FRY LIBERATION
RESULTS DISAPPOINTING Reference to-the refusal of the Department of Internal Affairs to usfl fingerlings lor liberation purposes instead of fry, was made by the president of the Rotorua Rod and Gun Club (Mr J. F. Thomas) at the annual meetnig of the club last week. *'ln the thermal area the policv for a great number of years ha"; been fry liberation, a large number being liberated every season, and results up to now have proved very sa;d Mr Thomas. "It is the opinion of many experienced anglers—in fact, it is almost unanimous —that experiments should be yfM on foot to ascertain the results likely to be obtained from libcratiur. of fingerlings. ''Overseas visitors, and anglers from all over the Dominion, express surpri.se there there are no holding ponds for fingerlings at the new hatchery recently erected at Ngongotnha, and from this it appears evident that the Minister and UnderSecretary are quite satisfied with tho present procedure. ''There is ample water in the Ho_ torua district to carry out the necessary tests; if the tests are satisfactory, then there is no justification for concentrating exclusively upon the liberation of fry. The point should be settled once and for all, for unless restocking is adequate to meet the levy made each year upon fish in the district lakes and streams then , the sport must inevitably -C•ter'lorate."
