THE ST JOHN AMBULANCE ASSN
ti\ The Whakatane branch of the St. John Ambulance Association is appealing for to attend its First.Aid classes which commence to. morrow evening in the Borough Coun c-il Chambers. The association is performing a work which all too frequently goes without recognition and is generally taken for granted by the public at large. It is composed 01 men who b3 r linking up are following an ancient and very honourable tra. dition, set by the Knights of St John, at the time of the Crusades. These noble men of while not averse to lighfting should the need arise, acknowledged their first duty to the relief of the suffering of others. Thus was born the first order of the red cross and all it stands for. Throughout the world the St John Ambulance to-day is carrying out 'the same duties imposed by its founders whose vows led them first to the relief of pain and distress. The field of sport owes its members a particular debt of gratitude. Always there, alwavs ready to assist, these men ask no reward for themselves.' But they need encouragement and they must have, numerical strength. Any young men who desires to increase liis usefulness in the community, and at the same time gain the useful and vital knowledge of First Aid should make a point of attending to-morrow evening and joining up with the Association.
