...1.. ■ •>"; i;, FROM WHAKATANE FOR SCHEME MEETING CALLED FOR MONDAY Surveys have been ' made for the best route for the proposed East Coast Highway connecting Whakatane and Opotiki via Ohiwa. and there has been a good deal of talk concerning the advantages of the but so far there has been no definite request ifrom the public of this district which can be forwarded to the Government. For the purpose of getting the op in ion of residents, and showing them -to be united behind the scheme, the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, is calling a meeting of burgesses and county le- , sidents in the County Chambers on Monday evening a,t eight o'clock, when the scheme will be fully discussed . In .view of the advantages "the scheme will offer it is hoped that -there will be a good gathering. A full • statement of the position will be made, and an endeavour made to show that the district is united in "its request for the highway. If the meeting has this result it will no .-doubt strengthen Whakatane's case -very greatly.
