PEDIGREE BULLS
HIGH-CLASS IMPORTATIONS
There was a notable gathering of pedigree cattle breeders at the steamer Port Montreal on her arrival at Wellington to land a valuable con signmen.t of live stock imported from Gre ait Britain via Canada. This shipment comprised eight bulls and included six Aberdeen Angus, one Red Poll and a Milking Shorthorn, the last being of particular interest as the first of the breed to be imported from England for a very considei. able period. K During his recent visit to England and Scotland Mr J. A. Mcfarlane of Ben Lomond Napier., took the opportunity of securing for himself and his family connections five Aberdeen Angus bulls and a Red Poll bull for Mr J. S. Pike, Westown, New Plymouth. In addition to the animals selected by Mr Mcfarlane were an Aberdeen Angus bull imported on behalf of Mr F. Armstrong, the wellknown breeder of Black Polls of Dan- | nevirke, and the Milking Shorthorn ■ bull purchased by Mr Leslie Barkla of Hawera. This bull Histon Wildeyes Band, master was bred at the famous Histon Stud of Messrs Chivcrs and Sons and is very closely related to some of the best blood procurable in England to-day. He is a two year old bull, is a full brother to Longhill'-s Musician who was sold for SOOOgns? his grand sire sold for 2000gns ? and his maternal grand dam' for lOOOgns. Butterfat backing is much in evidence as all the dams from whom Bandmaster is descended are qualified and many of them have secured milking awards. This is the first Milk ing Shorthorn bull to arrive in t he Dominion from the United Kingdom for nearly twenty years and he should be of very great benefit to the breed in this country. Mr Barkla is to be congratulated on his foresight. ''In these importations," said Mr Mcfarlane, "the main object was to secure 'breeders' bulls and in doing so success was also achieved in procuring animals which are of a'high standard of merit individually and which possess good conformation, quality and breed character." The animals were imported through the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd.
