CAR HITS POLE

YOUNG MEN HURT three in hospital ! The blacking-out of lights for a ; few seconds in Whakatane at G-oO , p.m. on Sunday night was. caused by : a light motor car striking a power pole about half way between the Te Rahu drain and the Whakatane West station turn-off on the newly tar- : sealed road. Five young men were, in the car. They were the driver Charles Burke, Roy Inder ? Jack Russell, Con Sainty and a young man named Couch. & It is not known how the accident occurred. It happened on a straight stretch of road and the car, was extensively damaged in front. The men were returning from Whakatane at "the time. Three were injured and admitted to hospital where their condition is satisfactory. They were: Russell, injury to right ankle, extent not known until X-rayed; Couch punctured wound in the right uppei -arm and shock; Sainty, fractured nose, wound on the nose, contusions to cheek and lips r also suffering V ' from shock. Later in the evening the borough power staff jacked the pole back . -eight feet into position, Whakatane experiencing another black-out while • this.was done.
