RECONSTRUCTION OF PA
In the opinion of some Hawera re. sidents the placing of palisades on the Turuturu-Mokai reserve would be equivalent to rebuilding Stonehcniic in England. Information to this effect was conveyed to a meeting of the Hawera centenary committee by the Mayor, Mr J. E. Campbell, who presided. He was inclined to agree with the contention, said Mr Campbell. It was better that the reserve should be left in its present state, for it then left much that could be supplied by the imagination of the visitor,. Mr Camnbell suggested that a model of the pa be made showing how the pa appeared 400 years ago, according to the traditions of the Maori race. He suggested that the model could be housed in a punga wharepuni adorned with Native enrv ings by Mr Pil;cn Hen are Toka. This building could be erected near the present entrance to the pa. Member a of the committee unanimously approved this view. She is an 18' year old Maori girl from a Taranaki district and her teeth show no signs of decay and have had no dental work.
