GOLF BEGINS
WHAKATANE CLUB'S SEASON OPENED
CANADIAN FOURSOMES
The rain held off for most of the afternoon but it was under grey skies with a strong wind blowing tnat the Whakatane Golf Club opened its J 93!) season on the links at Paioa on Saturday.
A fair muster of old and new players and visitors heard the President, Mr L. W. Luxton, declare the season open. He regretted that the dry spell had made it necessary to postpone the opening day but the club was providing a water supply. This would be installed by next season and it would make them independent of the weather.
Mr Luxton read out apologies for absence from Messrs Frank Reynold-? and Luke Rangi, and a telegram from Mr R. S. Baker and Mrs Baker wishing the members every success in the coming season. Mr Baker had been a very keen member, said M*' Luxton, and they appreciated the message from him. Mr Luxton welcomed all and declared the links open for play. He drove the first ball, a good drive rather to the right of the fairway.
Nine hole mixed Canadian four, somes followed, players starting either from No. 10 or No. 1. Those who did the long nine received a three stroke handicap in addition to a .quarter of the partners' combined handicap. The event was Avon by A. Martin (Mokorua) and Miss Pyne .>4 net. Other scores were CradwicK and Mrs Armstrong 45 net, and Bridger and Mrs Bridger and A. C. King and Mrs King 37 net.
