The black forwards by a stries of /liit<jrniin,ed rushes won thciy way to Aialf where continued infiingem^n I 's - their chances t 0 improve. Poroporo came again the backs swing

ing into action but showing little combination. The blacks found strength in strong dribbling rushes which made good country and put the blues on their mettle. Moore and Mate however took a hand and dribbled well into the opposition quarter where loose scrambling play took place. Roia's liner gave the blues still better advantage but in spite of all efforts to cross half time arrived without further score. A strong westerly wind rather hampered play in the second hall . Poroporo adopted an early offensive but failed to make headway against the sturdy opposition pack. In decisive midlield play occupied a lull ten minutes till Mei'ito Hashed through and put the blues on the attack again. . W. Crapp saved a score narrowly. Hohapata, "Wells and Courtney figured in a swift counter oflensive which swept the blues behind their own twenty-five. Poroporo had an anxious five minutes defending and finally accepted a force. Loose forward, plav followed till the call ol' time. Mr R. G. Burton was referee. WHAKATANE OUTCLASSED WAIMANA HARD NUT TO CRACK! Whakatane were beaten in the first match of the season by Waimana by 8 points to 3. Last year's competition winners were outclassed on day, the home team playing with better combination and appearing to be fitter. Waimana gives promise of being a hard nut to crack. There are several player.? in the team, and it was probably, only their lack of appreciation of the rules that kept them from defeating Whakatane much more heavily. For offside play and lifting in the scrum the referee, Mr B. Norman, gave 14 penalties against Waimana and only three against Whakatane. Whakatane were unlucky in that they had a strong wind to contend with in the first half, and it died down and gave them very little help after the change over. Whakatane's light 3-3-2 scrum got the majority of the ball, but the half-back and first five-eighths could do little withit, and it was seldom that thej r sent it out to their outside men. The wingers did not handle once after a serum. Mitchell scored one of Waimana's tries, and Bovnton converted. Best '•■coved a, try for Whakatane. K. Mollis, playing on the wing for Wha. katane, received a bad knee knock and left the field. TANEATUA BEATS RUATOKI Ruatoki's re-entry to Rugby Union football was marked by their severe defeat at the hands of Taneatua In" 19 points to 5, Taneatua fielded a strong team and the side will have to be reckoned with in future games. Ruatoki had some good players, but the influence of a season of League football was noticed as they found it difficult to adapt themselves again to the tighter Union game. Thev will probably do better in future en. gagements. The game was played in gusty weather and the wet ball made handling difficult. However, in spite of this there were many patches of good play. WAIMANA 6 v OLD BOYS 3 The Old Boys football club mad;; their debut into junior football by playing their first match against Waimana. Although Waimana .von the match by six points to three they did rot have the best of the play. Old Boys did remarkably well and more will be heard of them as tho .season progresses. Amongst the back' who played well were Armstrong, K. Schmidt, R. Rawson and W. BiHgcr. Tile pack was inclined to break up too soon. The forwards oil both sides giving away too many free kick; for oil side play. Waimana fielded a good hard pack which was bached by a fair line. On attack they were always ;i hard proposition. TANEATUA 6 v STAR 3 In a very evenly matched game i-i.st Saturday in which bright foot.. -;al! was evident throughout Taneatua were successful against Stars by R points to 3. Sisani and Goddard scored tries for the winners, D. Wilson scoring Star's only try. Mr Jack, was referee.
