PARK AT THE HEADS
CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL EARLY ACTION LIKELY A statement that there was nothing to prevent work being commenc. Ed on the proposed marine park at The Heads as a centenary memorial was made by the Mayor at Monday's borough council meeting. A sum of about £600 would be available with subsidy. Cr W. Sullivan said that work should be commenced without 100 much delay and the Mayor agreed. Some planting in grass and trees could be carried out before the mala filling was completed. There would be plenty of money available, A little later it was stated that the borough and county would be calling a meeting shortly to discuss plans and methods of financing the Celebrations. A letter was also received from the secretary of the Bay* of plenty zone asking For a sketch design of the park. Subject to compliance j the scheme would be passed to the national council for approval at an outlay of £1000. Mr D. V. Saunders said the estimate was actually £1350. Of this the county would contribute £2;>t). the Government £333, and the borough up to £750 if the sum were fully expended. ITe had thought it w T ise to keep the borough estimate rather high so as to cover any increased costs. lie had written to the Zone Council pointing out the sum estimated was £1350 instead of £1000 so that there would be no misunderstanding. _ 4 ,
