Local and General.

The proceedings in the B.M. Oourfc and several Letters to the Editor are unavoidably held over.

Mr Sheath, Postmaster, has kindly handed us one of the new postal cards, wb/oh will come into use on the Ist proximo, and to whioh we referred some time ago. The card' is similar to that in use in Europe, and will doubtless be much in vogae, the -only feature militatiog against its entire suocees being the comparatively speaking high postage rate, whioh, had it been one halfpenny instead of one penny, in the long run would prove more revenue* producing.

We hear that it is doubtful whether the General Government will comply with the application from th» Eufikati settlers for aa additional grant of 10 000 anres, on the Bam© terms as the 10,000 which the latter now hold. There is aburdanop of land available in the Tioinitv' of Eatikoti for a large grant in exceas of what the settlers now hold, but it would appear that the Government are deßirous of disposing of th^ir land in that quartc? to greater advantage Jhan they have yet done*

£ From traveller* from Ohinemnri and else' .^hero, wo daily hear of, the neoeaejty for a place of abcomodation .at Uritara, Y^e believe the reason the licence was opposed oa a former occasion was (he antipathy v of the ' speoial Katikoti settlers to hare a publio chouse in their midst. We. .really,, think thafci this is a matter with which the ..settlers., have comparatively little to.do,it being, the travel* Jers who experience the wantj of snob, a place. The proprietors of the Pioneer store at Urilara id their beet to accommodate tbe travelling public, but then they have only accommodation for two at a time.and very often theie ia no horse feed to be had. A g*»tfemaa

wbo recently came overland from Ohinemuri informs us that he was quite surprised to find no Hotel at Uritara, situated as it is on the high road to the former place : there is no necessity to call at Bowen Town at all, it being considerably out of the way. We think in this. matter prejudice should be thrown aside, and tbe publio given the right to command accommodation and horse feed at Uritara where it is most urgently required, being about equidistant between Tauranga and Ohinemuri.
