(FKOM OXTB, OWN COEBEBPONDENT ) Auckland, Tuesday afternoon. The Hero has arrived. The election to-day, for City West, is very tame. John Chad-wick's new hotel causes much comment. Mr Highley, after taking the best legal advice, threatens- to sue Mr Penny for defamation of chai'acter. Mr Penny's conduct in this matter is very much censured. The Rowena is on the gridiron, and will miss a trip. A requisition has "been sent to the Bank of New Zealand to open at Ohinemuri, and the bank is likely to comply. Tuesday evening. The City West election resulted as follows :— Tonks, 656 ; Farnall, 38 ; Eochfort, 13. The Bebington and passengers are still in quarantine. A meeting of ratepayers of Eden, convened by the chairman of the Highway Board, passed a vote of approval of the action of the Auckland members in advocating separation. Another meeting, at Otahuhu, is to he held to-night. A meeting is called for Eriday, to make arrangements for receiving the English Cricketers next summer. During a strong N.E. gale on Sunday, the schooner Hover drifted into the baths, doing and sustaining great damage. The captain and mate of the Lady Franklin have had their certificates susnwßied for a month for stranding the vessel at Kaipai-a. The Hero has arrived after a very rough passage.
