Auckland, Tuesday evening. Four- cottages in Summer street, Mount Eden, were burnt on Saturday night. The inmates had a narrow escape, and the greater part of their furniture was destroyed.. During the late heavy weather the schooner Helen was totally wrecked at Omaha, and the cutter Maude was driven ashore at Wangarei ;. no lives lost..
Colonel Steinberger, and' Captain Eatse, of the Yibela, leave for the Islands in the schooner Ephunae, tomorrow.

that Tawhiao should be ruler in his own district. The 1 Harbour Board have called a special- meeting for Tuesday, to investigate charges brought by the Star against Errington, in connection with the Dock. A seaman named Douglas, was yesterday, before daylight, knocked overboard from the cutter Dante, in the Manukau ; two passengers lowered the dingy to pick him up, and all three disappeared. Douglas was drowned, but the others have turned up to-day. Sailed : Taupo, for Wellington and the South, with members of Assembly. An American whaling skipper at Eussell has been sentenced to 48 hours' imprisonment, and £4 fine, for maltreating one of his crew. (FBOM OUB OWN CORBB6BOXDKNT.) The Abduction Case. i Stoppage of Land Sales. Maketu, Tuesday afternoon. At the E.M. Court, Henare Pukuatua versus Turo Makai, charge of abduction. The prosecutor failed to produce sufficient evidence, and the prisoner was accordingly discharged. Considerable surprise is evinced at the Government stopping land purchase operations in the district, much of the opposition having been withdrawn. It is presumed the Native Office has again the credit of closing the district against European settlement.
