TOWN BOARD.
A meeting of the above Board was held at the office of the Secretary on Friday morning 1 . Present: Messrs E. Gh Norris (Chairman), Firth Wrigley, and Conway. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The ordinary routine business of confirming minutes, approving correspondence, and passing accounts was gone through. THE NEW FOEM OF EHOISXBATIOJT OF VOTES. The Chairman read a letter from the Provincial Secretary forwarding a copy of the Act relative to the registration of claims of voters, by the provisions of which, it devolves upon clerks to Road Boards to prepare fists of the names of ratepayers entitled to vote. The Secretary was accordingly instructed to prepare the necessary lists for the Tauranga North Township Highway District. Relative to the extension of the wharf for the purpose of erecting a coal-bin for use of the steamers trading to Tauranga, the following letter was read : — Colonial Secretary's Office), Wellington, Februaary 9, 1876. Sir, — With reference to your letter, No. 199-76, of the 27th ultimo, lam directed by the Colonial Seoretary to inform you that, before it can be ascertained whether the Gorernor would eanbtion the extension of the public wharf at Tauranga or not, detailed plans and specifications of the proposed work must, in accordance with section 33 of " The Marine Act, 1867," bs submitted to the Marine Department. A. plan of, or tracing from a chart of the havbour, with the eiisting wharf and proposed addition drawn to scale tbereon, should accompany the detailed pi m and specification. — I have, &0. , AtrßßLius M. James T, Bradley, Eiq., Seoretary to Tauranga North Highway, Tauranga, The Board decided that it was not advisable that any further steps should be taken until a written guarantee was received from the owners of the s.s. Rowena that they would carry out their agreement, and the matter was therefore left over until next meeting. EMPLOYMENT OF LABOTTB. Mr R. C. Jordan, the Engineer to the Board, who was in attendance, asked for information relative to the employment of labour for keeping the streets in order during the winter months He pointed out to the Board that there would be a great deal of work to be done, and recommended that James Young, a really competent man, should be permanently employed on fine days to do the necessary work ; as, by this means, he felt confident that any repairs would be better executed than under the present system of letting the work out by contract. •." " The Board did not consider itoeoe^ ticular by promising permanent employment, but authorised Mr Jordan to employ labour whenever it ghoukl be necessary. ' Mr. Bicker's application, for «x
weeks' extension of time to remove his house was granted. ! FOOTPATH IN THE CAMERON BOAD. A proposition from Mr Conway that the Engineer should be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the formation of a footpath on the Cameron Boad from Wharf Street to the end of the town boundary was carried, though it was understood by the Board that no further action should be taken towards carrying out the work until it was clearly seen that the necessary expenditure would be admissable. LETTER PROM THE CHAIRMAN OP THE COUNTRY BOARD. The Chairman requested the attention of the Trustees to what he considered the most important business of the meeting: he referred to a correspondence that had passed between the Town and Country Boards relative to a letter received from the Chairman of the Mata Mata Board, addressed to the Tauranga Eoad Board, which had been opened by him (Mr Norris) and handed to the Bat of Plenty Times for publication and afterwards forwarded to the Chairman of the Country Board, who, in his reply, alleged that the letter was the property of the Country Board. Tauranga, February 21, 1876. Sir,— ln answer to a communication received from jou enclosing a letter from the Uhairman of the Matamata rtoad Board to the Chairman of the Taurnnga Boad Board, in answer to one sent by fcbafc Board. I have to state that I cannot understand why you should so far forget youtnelf as to purloin and make use of a document belonging to another Board. Such action in your capacity as Chairman of the Tauranga North Township Highway Board is derogatory to your position as an officer of a public body, or to any pretension you may have to be a gentleman. — I have, &0., John A; Chadwiok, Chairman. The Chairman North Township Highway Board, Tauranga. The matter was postponed until the next meeting in order that all the members of the Board might be present to consider what action should be taken. The Board then adjourned.
