THE LATE INQUEST AT KATIKATL— THE CORONER'S REPLY.
TO THIS EDITOB.
Sib, — The statement made by "Juryman" in his letter contained in your last issue that the iaterests of' tiie jurymen who served on the late inquest at Eatikati wore never propei'ly represented by the coroner is directly false. Although it is no part of the duties of a coroner to represent the claims of jurymen, yet a claim for expenses drawn up by the foreman, and signed by the jurymen, was forwarded by him to the proper quarter, accompanied by a letter of hia own forcibly recommending the same, but without any effect other than a reminder that no provision was made by the Legislature. It is a matter of regret that any of the jurymen should have been misled by promises that their expenses would be paid, but for that the ooroner is uv no way whatever responsible. '• Juryman" ' has also omitted to state that the inquest owns held in the open air, and that the coroner was occupied in taking notes, so. that the slight, irregularities mentioned .by^him oould easily occur without his attention being drawn to them. The remainder of* 'Juryman' B"letteJ is-andeserviag of notice, as the barely concealed illrwill with.whiah it is direoted must, be sufficiently., discernible to all. — I am, ,&o. t GOEONER.
